What is CoreTherm®?

CoreTherm® - Patient Specific Microwave Treatment for BPH

Before therapy

  1. The area to be treated is washed.
  2. You void your bladder and are assisted in emptying it completely via a catheter.
  3. The penis and urethra are anesthetized with an anesthetizing gel, which is inserted in the urethra. If necessary, you will be given painkilling or calming drugs.
  4. When the anesthetic has been in effect for 5 minutes, the doctor inserts the CoreTherm catheter via the urethra. To keep the catheter in place, it is fitted with a small balloon. This is now filled by injection with sterile water. A temperature sensor is then inserted through the catheter.
  5. Finally, another temperature meter is inserted via the rectum and a band, which also registers temperature, is attached around the penis.

CoreTherm® therapy

The aim of the therapy is to reduce the size of the prostate in order to diminish prostate-related problems.

Therapy can take as little as 10 - 30 minutes and is performed by transmitting microwaves to the prostate via a specialized catheter. A temperature sensor is also inserted through the catheter, which measures the temperature of the tissue within the prostate. Microwaves heat up the problem-causing parts of the prostate tissue and destroy them. The doctor follows the whole process on a computer screen and adjusts the microwave effect as required.

After therapy the urethra and prostate gland swell. It takes time for the swelling to go down, and therefore you will need a catheter for a period of time.
